Messages of condolences and solidarity to Greece and Turkey, following the 6.7 R of magnitude that hit Smyrna (Izmir) and the Island of Samos, have been sent by the U.S. Department of State and the National Security Advisor O’Brien, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.
The primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in the United States, Archbishop Elpidophoros, posted on his Twitter account the following message in English, Turkish and Greek: “Our prayers are with all those affected by the earthquake that struck both Greece & Turkey, especially Samos and Izmir. Natural disasters remind us that we’re all human beings, and the suffering of one is the suffering of us all. May God grant mercy, comfort, and relief to all.”
Former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden has posted the following message:
“Jill and I send our prayers to the people of Greece and Turkey following today’s earthquake. We’re grateful for the brave rescuers saving others, and for the governments of Greece and Turkey putting aside their differences to support each other.”
Prsident Trump’s National Security Advisor Robert C. O’Brien said:
“Our prayers are with the people of Turkey and Greece after today’s earthquake. It’s great to see both countries putting their differences aside to help each other during a time of need. The United States also stands ready to assist.”
Finally, State Demartment Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said:
“The United States expresses our condolences for the lives lost and damage caused in Izmir, Samos, and Chios by the earthquake in the Aegean. We are heartened by and support the cooperation between @nikosdendias
and @mevlutcavusoglu during this tragic event.”
