The government of Cyprus has received assurances about the nature of a dinner between President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, on May 30.
A UN Spokesperson issued, late on Friday, a new statement in regard to a meeting on Thursday between the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Nicos Emiliou and the UN SG’s Chef de Cabinet Susana Malcorra.
“We can confirm that the Permanent Representative of Cyprus met Chef de Cabinet Susana Malcorra yesterday”, the statement said.
It further noted that Emiliou “received the assurances that the Government of Cyprus sought about the nature of the dinner”.
The statement comes in the wake of two different statements by the UN on Friday.
Earlier on Friday, a UN SG spokesman replying to question by CNA on the matter said that during his meeting with Malcorra, Emiliou had “received the assurances the government of Cyprus had requested”.
However according UN sources this statement did not satisfy UN SG’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer’s aides. As a result another written statement of the UN SG spokesman was issued officially three hours later which changed the content of the initial statement.
“The Chef de Cabinet reiterated the Secretary-General`s full confidence in his Special Advisor and, with this in mind, confirmed that the Special Advisor of the Secretary-General on Cyprus intends to handle the dinner appropriately”, the statement said.
The new statement resulted in Nicosia’s reaction since, according to diplomatic sources, Malcorra had not mentioned anything during the meeting with Emiliou about the UN SG’s “full confidence in his Special Advisor”, a matter which according to the same sources is between the Secretary General and his Special Advisor.
On the contrary, the initial reference of the assurances given to Nicosia was replaced with the phrase that “the Special Advisor intends to handle the dinner appropriately”.
According to diplomatic sources the final statement issued later on Friday is essentially a repeat of the initial statement with the addition of the phrase “about the nature of the dinner”, an addition asked – according to sources – by Nicosia. The same sources expressed Nicosia’s satisfaction with the content of the final statement.
This will be the first encounter between President Anastasiades and Eroglu, since Anastasiades’ election in February.
