Since 1970, over 15,000 teens and young adults have experienced a 30 year old tradition committed to building, “Faith and friendships that last a lifetime.” IONIAN VILLAGE, a jewel in the crown of Orthodoxy here in America gives our youth a foundation of understanding of who they are and what their faith means to them. It helps them interact with their peers from throughout the United States and helps them identify where they stand as young Greek Orthodox youth. Ionian Village is an experience. Teens and young adults that participate in Ionian Village travel across Greece, venerate the relics of saints, walk in the footsteps of the Apostles, and visit significant sites of Greek history and culture. Ionian Village is a unique summer camping program located in Greece and operated by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. It builds on the foundations which have been introduced and taught by their family and Church. The Office of Ionian Village is now accepting staff applications for the summer 2004. If you are interested in joining the Ionian Village staff, visit the REGISTER section of their web site to download your application. All applications are due by January 31. Their web site is: www.ionianvillage.org or call 646-519-6190. It is also not too early to think about putting your child in Ionian Village as a camper for this summer. There are two programs for your consideration. The Summer Travel amp is for 7th to 9th graders and the Byzantine Vewnture is for 10th to 12th graders. For information call 646-519-6190 or via e-mail at ionianvillage @goarch.org.
For the last few months the ATHENS CAFÉ at 32-07 30th Avenue in Astoria was closed for renovations. Well, it recently opened and its new décor includes new furniture and a striking bar. The Athens Café with its outdoor seating has been a favorite in Astoria for a long time and with its new décor serves up an atmosphere which is enjoyable and comfortable. Speaking of serving, their deserts have always been superb and the list of cocktails is endless. They offer light snacks, pizza and salads. No reservations needed, but for large parties, it may be a good idea to call ahead on busy weekends, 718-626-2164. Bravo to NICK CONSTANTINOU and NICK GREGORIOU on a wonderful job.
Till next week when we go “Around Our Town.”
