THE BISHOP OF KYKKOU OF CYPRUS, NIKKIFOROS, celebrated the Divine Liturgy at St. Demetrios Church in Astoria and spoke of the need to find a solution to the Cyprus issue and how the Greek community of New York plays a pivotal role in this process. An interesting point was made during his speech regarding the “crossing over” by the Greek Cypriots, to the occupied areas of Cyprus, held by the Turks. This is obviously very emotional for the Greeks Cypriots who have not been able to see their occupied homes since 1974. The desire must be great to just want to make this very emotional and heart wrenching journey. But, by crossing over into the occupied territories it has given credibility to Denktash as one who is compassionate and anxious to work with the Greek Cypriot community. While in fact Denktash is exploiting the situation to gain favor in the International arena of public opinion and feathering his economic nest.

DENNIS MEHIEL, who ran for Lt. Governor in New York and is the former Democratic County Chair of Westchester has been serving as the State Chairman for the Sen. JOHN KERRY for President. This has been a busy week for Dennis who organized a number of fundraisers for Kerry in New York. It seems that the Kerry candidacy is drawing tremendous support in New York for his run for the White House in 2004.
