The New York University women’s volleyball team held off Emory University in five games and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship Match with their victory at the University of La Verne in La Verne, California.
“When we switched sides trailing 8-5 in the last game, we had our best server Jennifer Gardikas coming up after a side-out,” said NYU head coach Ed Caesar. Gardikas took the serve with NYU trailing 8-6 and the Violets scored the next five points. After an Emory (32-13) point, NYU scored the final four points to win the National Semifinal match.
Gardikas had 12 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Biegen finished with 16 kills and 7 blocks. Jennifer Wylie contributed 16 kills, eight digs and two blocks.
The Violets faced Washington University (36-3), in Saturday night`s National Championship Match, but fell one game short of the National title.
Jennifer Gardikas had a team-high 12 digs, while her sister Martha Gardikas had 11. Vanessa Biegen led NYU with 10 kills. Katya Khmelnitskaya had 31 set assists and 10 digs.
Both Jennifer Gardikas and Khmelnitskaya were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
