NEW YORK.- Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D., 14th District) hosted on Friday a public celebration in tribute to Greece’s Olympic achievement. In the event that was held in Athens Square Park, in Astoria, Carolyn Maloney, a great philhellene and Co-chair person of the 111 member Hellenic Caucus in the US House or Representatives, a special tribute was paid to the Greek American volunteers in the June 19 Olympic Torch ceremonies in New York City, as well as to two members of the Coast Guard, for their services to the people of New York, after 9/11, as well as Elias Neofytidis, from the Center for Macedonian Studies.
Present at the event were, the Greek Deputy Foreign Minister, Takis Skandalakis, NYC Council Gifford Miller and Consuls General of Greece and Cyprus, Catherine Bouras and Martha Mavrommatis.
Congresswoman Maloney saluted Greece’s successful hosting of the 2004 Olympic Summer Games, calling them one of the best ever.
“I am privileged to represent Astoria, Queens – one of the largest and most vibrant communities of Hellenic Americans anywhere in this country. I never had any doubts that Greece would be an excellent host fo the 2004 Olympic Games, truly some of the greatest ever to be held,” said Representative Maloney.
She added that while on October 28, 1940, Greece said NO to the Axis aggression, in 2004 Greece said NO to all the obstacles and held very successful games.
Congresswoman Maloney was named “Bouboulina” by the Greek Americans, for her persistent fight for the issues of concern to our community. Speaking at the event, she mentioned her efforts to protect the Greek heritage and name of Macedonia, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, her fights to stop Turkish violations of the international law in the Aegean, and her efforts to find a just, viable and lasting settlement of the long standing Cyprus problem.
“After many years of struggle, Maloney said, Cyprus is now a full member of the EU”.
She has also mentioned her efforts to establish the Hellenic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
“We haven’t lost a single vote in Congress”, she added proudly.
Council Speaker Gifford Miller called the Summer Olympics “the best ever. He thanked Greece for shown hospitality to the thousands of athletes and visitors but also for the ideals of Democracy and freedom it gave to the World, values that contributed to the success of the United States.
He also thanked Carolyn Maloney not only for bringing every body together to celebrate the successful Olympiad, but also her leadership to build bonds between the United States and Greece and her efforts for a safe country.
Deputy Foreign Minister Skandalakis praise Maloney for being a good friend of Greece and help building bridges connecting the two countries and their peoples.
He has also paid tribute to the Greek American volunteers, for their contributions to the success of the games.
“Greece has held the safest and the most successful games ever and the first to be congratulated for this accomplishment are the volunteers, especially the ones from the diaspora”.
He also said that the small but glorious Greece has proven to the whole world of what it is capable to do.
Consul Generals Bouras and Mavrommatis also spoke at the event.
