Lyons’ president Nicos Tziazas spoke to the GreekNews
The athletic teams of our parishes, as well as the Junior Olympics, have very few sponsors from within the Greek American Business Community. The number is not satisfactory yet, but at least these few continue to be an example that waits for many more to follow it.
One of these individuals is Nicos Tziazas, president of the based in New York, Lyons Mortgage Services. Since Lyons started doing business, about seven years ago, it’s been a strong supporter of the Junior Olympics. Nicos Tziazas is heavily involved in the children’s sports. He is the president of “Eleftheria-Pancyprian”, an association that promotes soccer for children of ages 6-18. About 200 children are so far participating in the teams.
“Lyons is supporting the Junior Olympics because such an event is of great interest for the young Greek Americans. We strongly believe such an event needs the support from every Greek organization. For me getting personally involved with children, for the last 20 years I do realize that they need our support and directions”.
Nick Tzazias, father of two, follows the Junior Olympics every year and assists as a coach some of teams of his community, Archangel St Michael in Roslyn. His children will take part in this year’s event.
“These young children from different communities are gathering together and at the same time by competing they bring up the Greek spirit. The idea of the Olympics comes from Ancient Greece and the children are proud of it”, says Mr Tziazas..
He sees the idea of the children getting a chance to meet each other, the main purpose of the Games.
“Children from the Hicksville community to meet with children from Brooklyn, or Queens.
Mr Tziazas brings up the desperate need for athletic infrastructure in our community, in the New York Area.
“The Greek American leadership hasn’t understand yet the importance of such facilities.. Besides the Greek American business people, the Archdiocese should find the way to obtain the proper facilities in order to serve the needs of our communities”.
Since few years ago, there have been efforts to obtain the Con Edison fiel and build new facilities.
“Our community is served only by the Con Edison soccer field It is the only one and that is very sad. We keep pushing the local politicians, especially for the Con Edison filed, but unfortunately we were not successful. There is a need for promotion of Children’s athletics. We live in an area with no facilities and the children need to have a place to gather, instead of wondering around the streets, where they are exposed to a lot of bad influences, including drugs”.
Besides offering a good way to teach our children values, sports may pave the way for some for college, said Mr Tziazas.
“Since all these Colleges and Universities offer a lot of scholarships for sports like soccer, basketball, etc, we found ways to be in touch with them. Some of our children have had already taken advantage of such scholarships”.
