CHICAGO.- The letter of protest, Christos Tomaras, Vice President of Council of Hellenes Abroad and coordinator for North and South America of SAE, to Mark Master, CEO of Talk Radio Network, Inc, follows.
“I am writing to you in my capacity as Vice President and Regional Coordinator for N. & S. America of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (ΣΑΕ). Ours is the umbrella for the many federations and other organizations representing more than 6 million persons of Greek descent around the world, more than 1.5 million of them in the United States of America.
I am certain each and every one of them would be deeply offended by the recent inaccurate, demeaning, and un-American on-air musings of one of your network’s “stars,” Michael Savage. We are writing to you, and not to your Mr. Savage, for two reasons: first, he apparently thrives on knowing that he hurts entire groups of people he considers inferior, and we choose not to feed such a perverse need. Second, you (not him) are responsible for the content of the programming you syndicate to more than 300 radio stations in the U.S. In recent years it has become ever more obvious that if he ever was a broadcast “star,” your Mr. Savage has truly imploded and become the radio equivalent of a “black hole” on the Nation’s airwaves: a place so dark and heavy that no light can escape.
Obviously based on a sophomoric and stereotypical understanding of surnames, joined to a total disregard for fact, Mr. Savage decided to tell his listeners nationwide that celebrity attorney Mark Geragos must be of Greek descent because his name ends in “-os.” Your Mr. Savage then continued to speculate that the reason he seems to see a constant “smirk” on Atty. Geragos’ face must be the result of his having sexual relations with sheep, inferring it was a common Greek pastime.
Mr. Geragos is in fact of Armenian, not Greek, descent. And his other comment begs an obvious question: How would Mr. Savage know that having relations with sheep is so pleasurable?
There is no end to the possible ripostes our constituents would want us to write here, nor an end to the litany of other outrages uttered by Mr. Savage, nor of the boycotts, firings or legal actions that have resulted from them. But on behalf of the 1.5 million Greek Americans in the U.S., the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (ΣΑΕ) must demand that the Talk Radio Network undertake the following:
Instruct Mr. Savage to correct, on-air, his inaccurate guess that Atty. Geragos is of Greek descent, and,
Instruct Mr. Savage to apologize, again on-air and not just to those Americans of Greek descent, but to all his listeners, for his obscene reference to bestiality.
We will expect your positive reply within 10 days of receipt of this letter, Mr. Master. If we do not receive it, we will then formally ask the following to support the position taken here by the World Council of Hellenes Abroad : the FCC; the Mayors of the cities that your network is given the privilege to serve; our Greek-American political leaders and friends at the federal, state and local government level; our business community and their partners, finally, the many other organizations that have found it necessary to protest, economically and/or legally, the calumnies inflicted on their constituents by your “star,” Mr. Savage.
Whether Mr. Savage has the legal right to spew what he does is for others to decide. As an organization, we have decided to join those who believe that all Americans deserve better than Mr. Savage on our airwaves”.
