To the Editor
We, the Greek-Americans, appreciate you effort to entice people to visit Greece. The Greeks on the other hand do their outmost to chase all tourists from Greece. Case in point.
I spend one and a half months in Greece, ke ta itha ola.
First 40 people blockaded the port of Pireas for 24 hours stranding tourists at the port. The strike/blockade was found to be illegal but no authority came out to remove the strikers.
Second, every few days there was a bank strike.
Third there was a strike at the Airports from the security people.
Fourth there was the truck strike.
So here I am a Greek tourist held hostage at The limani, the airport my rent-a-car (no gas) and if that wasn’t enough my money was also held hostage at Ethniki Trapeza.
I am Greek and got infuriated, but just think about the non Greek tourists that only have a week or two to spend on vacation. Greeks bitch and moan things are not good with their tourism. Turkey on the other hand, had a 20% increase to their economy attracting tourists worldwide and having them leave happy.
Other observations. No Greek employee in the private or public sector ever smiles. First response to any request is “afto then ginete” and that response is not even looking toward your direction. All of Greece is a garbage dumping ground including our beaches.
I appreciate what you’re doing to help “OUR GREECE”, however before we entice non-Greeks to visit Greece we should educate Greeks on how to govern themselves and then how to treat a tourist.
I visit Greece every year for past 40 years, I have seen it all. Just when you think things are getting better we fall right back. I will still go to Greece even though it is what it is, because just like you love your mother, no matter who she is or what she is you still love her, I still love ” OUR GREECE:.
Thanks for the chance to vent.
