PATCHOGUE.- Blind with jealousy, Greek-American Dimitris Zodiatis, 39, killed with a hunting shotgun his ex-lover, Arhodoula Giannacopoulos, 47, at her Oasis Diner in Long Island, before blowing his own brains out, police said.
Zodiatis entered the diner at approximately 6:25 a.m. Saturday and started shouting to Giannacopoulos in the dining area. A cook who rushed from the back to see what was going on saw Zodiatis struggling with Giannacopoulos, who told him to go and call for help. When he came back it was too late. Both victim and killer were laying dead.
Suffolk County Homicide Squad Commander Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick said that Zodiatis “came in at the Patchogue eatery carrying what looked like a box of long-stemmed roses, but inside the box was a short-barrel shotgun. It’s just a sad story.”
Zodiatis blasted a shot into the chest of Giannacopoulos – a mother of three, who was preparing for the day – and then coolly finished her off with a shot to the head as she lay in a pool of blood near the counter area, police said. Then he turned the gun on himself.
The estranged couple had dated for at least 10 years until Giannacopoulos kicked Zodiatis out of her Lake Ronkonkoma home about a month ago, said Fitzpatrick, who added that on May 19, Giannacopoulos called the police to her home because a spurned Zodiatis “had threatened suicide.” He was taken to Stony Brook Hospital for observation and released.
