Chicago, IL.- Each year, Greek Orthodox Christians throughout the United States and Greece commemorate with hymns and prayers one of Greeceʼs most important political events – Greek Independence Day. Koraes Elementary School, a Greek Orthodox parochial school in south suburban Chicago affiliated with SS Constantine and Helen Church, commemorated Greek Independence Day through festivities.
Two OXI Day celebratory programs, sponsored by the Greek department of Koraes Elementary School, were offered. One program was offered by our Afternoon Greek school students and the other took place after church. Students performed traditional island dances, recited patriotic poems and speeches, and sang songs, all in honor of this historic day in Greek history.
The program was well attended and enjoyed by all. Students then participated in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade in downtown Chicago. Pictured are our kindergarten students, who performed in the program.
