WASHINGTON, DC – Greek Americans for Kerry, an all-volunteer, national grassroots organization supporting John Kerry for President, has released endorsements from several prominent Greek-American leaders who support John Kerry for President. U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes (MD), former Governor Michael Dukakis (MA), California State Treasurer Phil Angelides, former Congressman John Brademas (IN), and author Arianna Huffington, have all issued statements supporting John Kerry for President and urging the Greek American community to vote for Kerry/Edwards on November 2nd.
“We are pleased to see so much vocal support for John Kerry and John Edwards from some of the most respected Greek-American leaders in this country,” said Jim Kapsis, co-founder, Greeks for Kerry. “They know that John Kerry understands and respects our community. They know that as president he will fight to help our small businesses, to expand access to affordable health care, and to create quality jobs here in America. They know that he will push hard for a fair solution to the Cyprus problem, help protect the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and restore respect for America in the world.”
Following are excerpts from the endorsements:
UNITED STATES SENATOR PAUL S. SARBANES (D-MD):
“Both John Kerry and John Edwards have been long-time friends of the Greek-American community. John Kerry served as Lt. Governor under Governor Michael Dukakis and John Edwards enjoys the strong support and long-time friendship of Greek-Americans in North Carolina. In the Senate they have worked closely with me on issues of special concern to our community — a just settlement for Cyprus, peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, and protection of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
“And they also share our values of hard work, entrepreneurship, and strong families. The Kerry-Edwards ticket has the vision and intelligence to restore our Nation’s respect in the international community and to bring back fiscal responsibility here at home. I hope you will join me and other Greek-Americans all across this country of ours in voting for and urging others to vote for John Kerry and John Edwards on November 2.”
FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR, MICHAEL S. DUKAKIS:
“John Kerry was my lieutenant-governor during l983 and l984 before he was elected to the United States Senate, and he was a terrific running mate and colleague to me. Since l984 he has been my Senator and a great one. At a time when we are being governed by the worst administration in my lifetime, we need John and Senator Edwards to give us a foreign policy that makes sense and reaches out to our international partners and leadership here at home that stands for economic opportunity for all, not just the privileged few. That is the kind of leadership in which I and the Greek-American community believe and the kind of leadership that Senators Kerry and Edwards will give us.”
FORMER CONGRESSMAN JOHN BRADEMAS (D-IN)
“John Kerry, a man of demonstrated courage, keen intelligence and wide range of public service, is deeply dedicated to America’s national interests. He will work to rebuild our shattered alliances abroad and to improve the lives of Americans at home. And John Kerry will be a President who will tell the truth to the American people. A President Kerry will mean a stronger, safer, fairer America.”
CALIFORNIA STATE TREASURER PHIL ANGELIDES
“John Kerry is a true philhellene. Throughout his service to his country, as a soldier and a public servant, he has demonstrated time and again that he shares our community’s values. He is committed to a just peace in Cyprus, protection of our beloved Ecumenical Patriarchate, and fair application of the rule of law throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and the world. John Kerry will be a great president! Please join me and Greek-Americans across America in supporting the Kerry-Edwards ticket on November 2nd.”
AUTHOR AND MEDIA PERSONALITY ARIANNA HUFFINGTON
“The 2004 election is nothing less than a referendum on the soul of our country — a political event with unprecedented significance for our lives and the lives of our children. It is our chance to prove to ourselves and to the world what America really stands for. George Bush thinks we should be a nation that operates out of its greatest fears. John Kerry believes we should be a nation based on hope and promise. That’s leadership in the tradition of Bobby Kennedy — leadership that can complete RFK’s unfinished mission of ending a misguided war, returning real compassion to our domestic agenda, and bring us together as a nation.”
