Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, who is visiting the US, has praised the contribution of Cypriots and Greeks abroad throughout the years especially as regards US interest in the Cyprus issue.
On Tuesday, he met with the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee David Harris and other leading officials of the Committee, whom he briefed of US Vice President Joe Biden`s visit to Cyprus and matters relating to relations between Cyprus and Israel.
The Government Spokesman also met with representatives of Cypriots living in the US, who he also briefed on Biden`s successful visit to the island.
“It was a very important visit with concrete results and Cypriots and Greeks in the US contributed to it”, he said. He added that their role throughout the years has been crucial, especially with regards to the role played by the US.
We also discussed Cyprus` upgraded role in the Eastern Mediterranean region, which affects both the efforts for a solution of the Cyprus issue but more generally the relations of the Republic of Cyprus with the US, as he noted.
Replying to a question he said that Cypriots in the US are definitely very pleased with the outcome of Biden`s visit to Cyprus.
Their contribution to making the visit happen was crucial, he said. The US Vice President, he added, knows the Cyprus problem well since he was first elected in the Senate, as he always had a close relationship with our community.
In this context, he noted, his visit to Cyprus was a result of this relationship.
Referring to the meeting he had with the American Jewish Committee he said that he briefed them on recent developments as regards the Cyprus issue and on Biden`s visit.
“It was a very important meeting and we exchanged points of view”, he added.
Christodoulides further said that during his stay in the US he will also be meeting with officials of the UN Secretariat and representatives of the UN Security Council Permanent Members.
According to sources, on Friday he will meet with head of European Affairs of the Secretariat Elizabeth Spehar and the Russian Permanent Representative Vitaly Churkin.
The Government Spokesman recalled that the UN Secretary General`s report on Cyprus is expected to be published soon. The resolution renewing the mandate of UNFICYP in Cyprus is also due to be adopted in July.
