New York.- Foundation for Colon Cancer Research and Prevention will be hosting its 2nd Annual Dinner Gala at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York, Castle, on Friday March 20 2009. The guest of honor this year will be renowned colorectal surgeon, Dr. Stuart H.Q. Quan.
Dr. Quan is an Emeritus Attending with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York and was the pioneer in improving patient treatment for rectal cancer in the 1950s with the techniques still being used today. Having received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, Dr. Quan thereafter attended Harvard Medical School and graduated in 1945. He performed his residency in Boston and then joined MSKCC, where he worked for half a century.
The Stuart and Victoria Quan Fellowship Fund in Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School was established for the support of promising pre-doctoral students pursuing research in the neurosciences. More than 20 fellows have benefited from the fund.
Dr. José G. Guillem, Attending Colorectal Surgeon and Director of the Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Family Registry at MSKCC, will host the eveningʼs program. The funds raised through the dinner gala and auction items will benefit the colon cancer research performed by Dr. Guillem at MSKCC. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States; only lung cancer claims more lives. Approximately 145,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer annually and 56,000 cases result in death.
The De Rosa Foundation was founded by Kathy De Rosa (born Kathy Constantopes from Rodos) following a diagnosis of hyperplastic polyposis syndrome, which if left untreated would result in colon cancer. Mrs. De Rosa was successfully treated for this condition and now raises much needed funds and awareness for this deadly disease.
Many rectal cancer survivors, prominent physicians and supporters will be attending the 2009 Dinner Gala. Tickets are $185.00 and may be purchased by calling (516) 365-6754 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
