Nicosia.- A total of 606,916 Cypriots and EU citizens have the right to take part in the European Elections yesterday and choose between 61 hopefuls for the six seats in the European Parliament allocated for Cyprus.
Excluding any unforeseen obstacles, authorities were expected to have the final results by 20.30 local time on Sunday (17.30 GMT), Chief Returning Officer Constantinos Nicolaides said in a press conference, on Friday, explaining however that results will not be announced officially before all ballot boxes have closed in all EU member states, that is to say at midnight, on Sunday.
The six elected candidates will be briefed by his office so that they can be present at the official announcement of their election at the Filoxenia conference center, in Nicosia.
Given the automatic registration of Turkish Cypriots who do not reside in government controlled areas in the electoral roll and the fact that there are five Turkish Cypriot candidates, these European Elections are of particular importance, Nicolaides said.
A total of 1,087 poll stations will operate on election day in Cyprus and abroad of which 50 will be allocated purely for Turkish Cypriot voters coming from the occupied areas of the island.
In particular there will be 414 poll stations in Nicosia, 56 in Famagusta, 171 in Larnaca, 298 in Limassol, 129 in Pafos and 19 abroad.
Turkish Cypriots who do not reside in the government controlled areas and have the right to vote will be able to vote in poll centres in areas close to crossing points.
