Ultra conservative radio producer says on his national syndicated show “Greeks sleep with sheep”
NEW YORK.- By Apostolos Zoupaniotis
When 80 years ago AHEPA was founded in Atlanta, there were still places in America with signs posted in public places saying “No Dogs or Greeks Allowed”. But today, even though Greek Americans have succeeded in politics, science and business, for some ultra-conservatives in the United States, they are still considered … close to the animal kingdom. The most recent racist anti-hellenic attack came from the well known radio producer and author of 19 books, Michael Savage, whose radio show “Savage Nation” is nationally syndicated and praised by neo-conservatives. Savage, wrongfully considering Michael Jackson’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, to be a Greek American, while he was making various comments about Jackson’s story, he said in his radio show on November 25, 2003:
“What’s with his attorney Mark Geragos and that permanent smirk on his face. Is that a trait of all Greeks? Maybe it`s because they sleep w/sheep or something.”
GreekNews called Mark Geragos’ Law Firm, asking for a comment. A secretary informed GreekNews that Mr Geragos is of Armenian dissent.
Michael Savage writes about his radio show on his web site:
“I guess people love my show because of my hard edge combined with humor and education. Those who listen to me say they hear a bit of Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein”.
Greek American Mike Annese, who alerted Greek News on the Savage comments, told us about this … Frankenstein:
“This man must be called accountable for such an insidious remark. If you cannot do anything about this verbal rape on our culture please e-mail me with the proper group that can. We must bind together and send a stern message and DEMAND a public apology, boycott his sponsors and call his station’s owners”.
Adopting his proposal, GreekNews calls on Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, AHEPA, SAE, AHI, Greek American politicians and businessmen to join in a protest and demand an apology from both Savage and the stations hosting him.
You can send your letter of protest to

“Disgusting, baseless and something we should speak out against”, characterized Savage’s comments. Greek American NY Assemblyman, Michael Gianaris, calling on the community to make sure that pressure be asserted to the sponsors of the radio program.
“Obviously, he told GreekNews, any references that are unfair and untrue towards an ethnicity are completely unacceptable in a country as diverse as the United States and there is no room for that kind of disgusting discourse. This guy has a history of this kind of behavior, that’s way he was basically fired from MSNBC, where he had his television show, because of similar comments my about another group of people.
Unfortunately it is no surprise, but what we need to do is make sure that the sponsors of the radio stations that carry his program come down on him and eliminate that kind of speech from the market place of ideas in this country.
What he said is disgusting, baseless and obviously something we should speak out against”.
