The leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat appealed to the international community in “Todayʼs Zaman”, 9/11/07 to pressure the Greek side to resume negotiations and at the same time stating that “Solution on Cyprus impossible until elections”.
In my opinion and the opinion of many other advocates for a just and honorable solution to the Cyprus issue, the Turkish side will not start the implementation of the agreement of July 8th before the February 2008 elections in Cyprus, because the Turkish side is now shooting for either partition (Annan Plan style) or Independence (Kosovo style).
The Turkish sideʼs next steps are: first try to prevent Tassos Papadopoulos from getting re-elected next February, and second to convince the International Community, especially Russia, that a “Kosovo style Independence” that NATO and France recommends is the best solution not only for Kosovo but also for Cyprus.
We, as overseas Cypriots, with the help of world citizens, believe in the existence of multi-cultural multi-ethnic multi-religious system of government as we have and enjoy in our adopted countries, and also believe that the Turkish continued occupation of northern Cyprus is the main reason for the Turkish-Cypriots communityʼs isolation.
We, that know what the Turkish side with its distortions of the truth and its paid propaganda ads to the media and the internet with the goal to intentionally giving wrong information and ignore the existence and the legality of the Republic of Cyprus as full member of the EU and the UN.
We, who with the 76% of the Cypriot voters rejected the “Ghost State” solution of the Annan Plan that made Cyprus a protectorate to outsiders.
We, more than ever before must support the president of the republic of Cyprus who will say yes to a true reunification of the country, yes to living together with the Turkish-Cypriot compatriots, yes to a single State solution with one citizenship one currency, same as we enjoy in our adopted countries, yes to a solution based on UN adopted resolutions, yes to a solution that will safeguard the Cypriot citizens first.
And above all support a President who will also say NO to human rights violation for any Cypriot citizen of Greek-Turkish-Maronite-Latin-British-Russian-American or other origins; and NO to a solution that will give a “Ghost State” or a confederation style Cyprus solution as he did in the past.
