This was an incredible race. Republicans spent millions of dollars in attack ads against me, but you met them head on with a phenomenal get-out-the-vote operation that turned out voters in every single county in the state.
The result of the election is disappointing, but it’s also further evidence of a broken campaign system that needs to be dramatically reformed. When I started this race, I pledged not to take a dime of corporate PAC or federal lobbyist money. When I made my pledge, pundits claimed I couldn’t even be competitive without taking corporate cash. And when it became clear that shadow groups made me their top target, some said it would be a blowout.
But because of you — because of your time, your grassroots donations, and your enthusiasm — we defied them and kept this race in a dead heat right until the very end.
Unfortunately, we came up short. Our voice — the people’s voice — was not loud enough to overcome the barrage of false attacks funded in secret by Republican billionaires and Karl Rove. They drowned out your voice, my voice, and all the voices that have called for transparency, accountability, and change.
Corporate special interests won this battle, but there is still a war to be fought to reclaim our elections and to truly restore the concept of a government of, by and for the people. I am humbled by your support for my campaign and your strength of principle, and I hope you will join me as we continue the fight for reform together.
Thank you for all you’ve done,
