This year, is the 34th year on Memorial Day Weekend, at the Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, N.J. The New Jersey Diocese was the first to hold such an event, started by St. Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Community, at Perth Amboy, N.J. It was originally for the communities of Northern New Jersey. The GOYAns were housed at homes, later as the event grew the games are held in Elizabeth, NJ. Now there is participation from all parts of the Metropolis of New Jersey.
The Chairman and director is Mr. Andrew Hios, of St. Athanasios, Paramus N.J. and the Co-Chair is Mrs. Ann Haviaris of St. George, Clifton N.J.
The events of the Junior Olympics include:
All track & field events,
swimming, and co-ed volleyball
Dinner Dance, Liturgy for participants and coaches on Sunday morning at the hotel, followed by final events closing ceremony and medal presentation
Goal for the future is to expand the Games Metropolis wide and be held on a college campus to accommodate the ever growing number of participants.
Since its inception, other Diocese’s (now Metropolis’) have also established successful GOYA Olympic programs. The beauty of the Olympics is that it brings the youth together through sportsmanship and fellowship.
