Debt relief for Greece will definitely be on the agenda when U.S. President Barack Obama visits Athens in November, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden told Greek reporters Lena Argiri and Katerina Sokou.
“I promise you that he will raise every relevant issue,” Biden said on Thursday night, at the Washington OXI Foundation’s annual gala at the US Institute of Peace, in response to reporters’ questions.
Biden received the Oxi Day Award for Courage, as did his son Beau Biden, who died of cancer a year and a half ago and was given the award posthumously. Also honored was Yazidi survivor of ISIS atrocities and sexual slavery, Nobel Peace Prize Nominee and UN Goodwill Ambassador Nadia Murad.
OXI Day Foundation President Andrew Manatos, Archbishop Demetrios of America, the President of the Jewish Museum of Greece Makis Matsas and Nadia Murad also offered remarks.
Nadia Murad, who was honored with Battle of Crete award, said no to barbarism.
Makis Matsas recounted his experience of escaping Nazis as a child and his engagement with the Jewish Museum in Athens
Vice president Joe Biden, who shed a tear for his son Beau, following the announcement that he is posthumously honored with the OXI Day award, made an emotional speech.
“”I am humbled to be standing alongside of her” , he said on Nadia Murad, a survivor of ISIL brutality now working to help victims of trafficking
“Tonight is a powerful reminder of what makes a man or woman honorable or courageous” , he said, stressing that “men and women of honor choose the right course even when it’s the harder course.”
He spoke extensively about his son Beau, who decided to enlist again with the Army and serve in former Yugoslavia, although he was the State Attorney General of Delaware.
“He made every moment count. His courage never gave out. He was full of hope to the end.”
Biden recalled his visit to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and praised Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Demetrios as two exceptional persons. He also praised the Greek American Community as the most loyal to him during his political career.
“The Greek community has helped shape my political consciousness, as well as shape this country and the world”, Biden said.
“Each of the tremendous honorees were selected for this prestigious recognition because they show the same extraordinary David vs. Goliath courage that Greece demonstrated against the Nazis during World War II”, said Andy Manatos, the President of the foundation.
The Washington Oxi Day Foundation works to honor and inspire courage in the world today. “Oxi” (pronounced “ohee”) means “no” in Greek. It is the single word that the Prime Minister of Greece answered when Hitler’s Axis Forces demanded, at 3:00 am on October 28, 1940, Greece surrender. Greece went on to become the first country to stop the Axis horror and would inflict a wound that was instrumental to Hitler’s ultimate defeat. Their courage led Winston Churchill to say, “If there had not been the virtue and courage of the Greeks, we do not know which the outcome of World War II would have been.”
“The Vice President and Beau exemplify such courage today — Beau for the courage he showed in risking his life for our country, in fighting for the protection of children, and in his fight against cancer. The courage and grace the Vice President has shown in the loss of his family members is remarkable and his David vs. Goliath battle against what will soon be the number one cause of death in the US, cancer, is truly inspirational.”
