Baltimore, MD.- A federal judge in Baltimore on Wednesday fined a Greek ship management company $2.4 million and imposed two years probation for violating federal oil-pollution laws.
Cardiff Marine, of Marousi, Greece, pleaded guilty to operating a “magic pipe,” aboard the bulk carrier the Liberian-flag M/V Capitola, and falsifying its oil record book, the Justice Department announced. A magic pipe is a fixture that bypasses a ship’s oil-water separator and allows oily waste to be dumped overboard.
The agency said an investigation began on May 3, 2010 when the ship called at the port of Baltimore. A crew member tipped off a visiting clergyman that the illegal activity was going on, and provided a video recording of the activity. The clergyman alerted authorities.
