On April 27, 2018 The Carnival of Love Foundation hosted a night of Spanish Flamenco at Melrose Ballroom in Long Island City, NY to celebrate its 10-year Anniversary and to raise funds and awareness to benefit families living with autism spectrum disorder and other special needs in their local community.
What started off as a community project in a leadership program in 2008, sparked a decade of community service to children and families in need by a dedicated team of “professional” volunteers who enjoyed adding the “fun” back into “fundraising.” This year’s themed event was a magical journey to Spain featuring live music from the Los Cintron Brothers, along with DJ Savas of Mylos Entertainment , authentic flamenco performances, aerial dance routines, a casino, and even bull rides.
Despite the carnival entertainment, the highlight of the night was the special presentation by two talented young boys on the autism spectrum, Benjamin Giroux and Kyle Baptista, who performed live on the stage. For his homework assignment, Benjamin wrote a poem named “I am odd” to describe his experience living with autism; the poem went viral and touched many people around the world. Olympia Milonas, Carnival of Love’s Musical Director, discovered the poem and wanted to bring it to life, so she asked Spiros Cardamis to compose a melody for it, and had Kyle Baptista sing the lyrics. Olympia’s intention was to showcase the beautiful capabilities and talents of individuals living with autism.
The evening was a wild success with over 300 guests in attendance praising the young boys and the charity’s past successes, while toasting to a bright new future as The Carnival of Love Foundation embarks on a new journey of opening of a Healing Arts Community Center in the LIC/Astoria, NY areas for families living with autism and special needs. The $45k raised for the event will give them a head start in that direction.
The Foundation’s Co-founder and President, Dennisia Slabakis , thanked the community for their love, generosity and support over the past decade, as their collective contributions brought them to this special moment in time, and has allowed them to fulfill on their mission of bringing community, love and joy to those in need.
