Palos Hills, IL.- The parish of Saints Constantine and Helen of Palos Hills, Illinois gathered its young people on Saturday, November 17, 2007 to share their God given talents of Song, Prose, Iconography, Oratory, Art, Photography, and more, as part of the communityʼs 20th Annual St. John Chrysostom Oratorical / Sights and Sounds Youth Festival which showcases and honors the God given artistic abilities of the Communityʼs youth. The Sights and Sounds Youth Festival is an expanded offshoot of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Department of Religious Education which holds competition on the local Parish, Metropolis and Archdiocese levels in essays, speech, iconography and poetry. The winners in the above categories from the Sights and Sounds Festival will represent the Parish of SS. Constantine and Helen in the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago Oratorical Arts Festival to be held May 3, 2008, dates and locations to be announced.
The Sights and Sounds Youth Festival not only allows those gifted in oratory, poem and iconography to express themselves, but for all the communityʼs young people to share the gift of their talent with the community as a whole. Though only 7-12th grade participants qualify for Metropolis representation, the Youth Festival offers a kindergarten-6th level as well to encourage the younger members of the parish to share their developing talents. The St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Sights and Sounds Youth Festival is underwritten and sponsored in a large part by the St. Helenʼs Philoptochos Society, the Ladies Society of “Agia Paraskevi”, the Koraes Parent Teacher Association and other individuals. Winners in Speech, Iconography, Poetry and Essay categories in 7th Grade and up receive a $300 Savings Bond or a scholarship to the Metropolis of Chicago Fanari Camp program held each June. The Sr. Speech winner will receive an “Ionian Village” scholarship.
