The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, visited o Wednesday, September 23 Archbishop Demetrios of America, who welcomed him to his office at the Archdiocese Headquarters. President Anastasiades is visiting New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting the two leaders discussed the most recent developments on the Cyprus problem, the prospects ahead for a just and lasting solution in accordance with the European law, and Cyprus’ role in the Eastern Mediterranean.
President Anastasiades was accompanied by the First Lady of Cyprus Andri Anastasiades, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Kasoulides, the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Ambassador Nicos Emiliou, the Consul General of Cyprus in New York Ambassador Vasilios Philippou, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, the director of the foreign minister’s office Koula Sofianou and Panikos Papanikoloaou, past president of the Cyprus Federation of America.
Earlier in the day, the First Lady of Cyprus Andri Anastasiades had a separate meeting with Archbishop Demetrios in his office. She was accompanied by the Consul General of Cyprus in New York, Ambassador Vasilios Philippou and his wife Anthea. Following their meeting the Archbishop and the First Lady visited Ronald McDonald House – New York, which also has a very active Greek Division and has hosted over the last 35 years more than ten thousand children from Greece and Cyprus, who were receiving cancer treatments in New York City hospitals. William Sullivan, President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House welcomed them and led a tour of the facilities.
Archbishop Demetrios hosted a luncheon in Mrs. Anastasiades’ honor at the Archdiocese, in the presence of guests representing the National Ladies Philoptochos Society of the Archdiocese.
