A Greek-American Beauty who is a product of the New York education system was awarded a distinct honor. Margaret Louise Skourlis was awarded the title Ms New Jersey United States 2009. She will be in the Ms United States 2009 pageant in Vegas in July. Throughout her life she has been involved with or participated in the following Greek events and organizations: St. Nicholas G.O.Y.A. in Flushing, New York, the Pan Cretan Convention, The Hellenic Kyklos Society, the Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund, the Daughterʼs of Penelope, Del Sol, the Archdiocese Oratorical Contest, and the Greek Childrenʼs Fund. She has three former Greek beauty queen titles from the Omospondia Federation, Miss Messinia 2001, Miss Melpia 2002, and Miss Kalamata 2003. Her lifeʼs goal is to bring persons, world wide, closer together. Her ideas of togetherness and with her help brought about “Livin It Up Montreal”, that is a trip for adults 21 and over to get together and meet once a year in Montreal. Her platform is Multiple Sclerosis, which she chose because of her motherʼs illness.
In 1999-2000 school years she took a Modern Greek class St. Johnʼs University. A flyer was handed out about the D.I.A.S. Summer Education Program in Greece. Margaret buried the paper in her room and as she was cleaning out her room a year later looking for a change in her life, she came across the flyer. This sounds like the latest Nia Vardalosʼ movie, “My Life in Ruins”. The summer of 2001 Margaret took the D.I.A.S. program. It was one of the best experiences in her life. She loved it so much she took the program again in 2002.
From the years that Margaret took the D.I.A.S. program, she watched 3 couples meet there and fall in love and get married. Margaret herself met many people of which she keeps in touch till this day. They are friends for life. The experience of living with other Americans in Greece was indescribable. The courses Margaret took at the University of Crete in Rethymno included: Archeology, Ancient Greek, Advanced Modern Greek, and Cretan history. Margaret helped dig up artifacts during archeology class in Eleftherna. The program sent them to Santorini in 2001. They visited the volcanoes and swam in the natural mud ocean in Santorini. It is an experience she will never forget which she wishes she could relive. For more information on Ms Skourlis, visit http://msnewjerseyunitedstates2009.weebly.com/index.html.
