NEW YORK.- Delegates of Cyprus Federation of America Congress, that took place on Saturday in New York, decided to send letters to President Bush and Secretary General Kofi Annan, in order to express the opposition of Cypriot American citizens to the “undemocratic”, “non-workable” and “non-viable” proposed solution to the Cyprus Problem.
Members from more than 22 chapters and associations from all over the US also decided that letters should be sent concurrently, to the Prime Minister of Greece Kostas Karamanlis and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos, in which they will express their support to the two leaders for the “difficult struggle they are fighting” for “ a just and a European settlement to the Cyprus problem.”
During the Conference statements also were delivered by Cyprus Ambassador in Washington Euripides Euriviades, Consul General in New York Martha Mavrommatis, President of CFA Peter Papanicolaou, President of International Coordinatimg Committee for Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) Philip Christopher and past CFA President Savvas Tsivikos. They all made reference, among other things, to the recent initiatives and action taken for promoting the positions of Cyprus in Washington.
Philip Christopher said that unless serious changes are made, the Greek American Community is not left with any choice other than work for the Annan Plan’s defeat in the referendum, April 20.
Cyprus Fderation President, Peter Papanicolaou said that pressure is placed upon Cypriot leadership, in order to accept the plan.
“But, he added, they miscalculate the will of the people of Cyprus, who will reject the plan in the referendum, if it stays as is. Cypriot people will not accept the fait accomplish”, he said.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece, Panayiotis Skandalakis also greeted the delegates, expressing the solidarity of the Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and his government to the people of Cyprus.
During the Conference, two Greek American Political Science Professors analysed the Annan Plan suggesting that “it leads to a crisis and not to a solution”
Professor George Grigoriou of William Paterson University in New Jersey said that “the architects of the Annan Plan, in an effort to serve the US and British interests alone started doing their homework from the last page of the problem instead the first.”
“It is actually a constitutional monster that will divide rather than bring together the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots.” He said.
Mr. Grigoriou said that “The Annan Plan 4 will be a blind where its only goal is to help Turkey with its European aspirations and not to have a solution which would secure permanent cooperation and peace,”
The Director of the Byzantine Center and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College of City University of New York, Chris Ioannides expressed the view that “the Philosophy of the Annan Plan is based on the position that the Greeks are to be blamed for everything and that the Turks are the victims.”
“Yes, we too share responsibility, – Athens and Nicosia,- for the consequences brought about by the Turkish invasion and occupation, but the biggest part lies with Turkey, Britain and the USA through Kissinger” Ioannides, said.
“This plan”, he added, puts on trial stand only the Greek Cypriots and it tells them «you will pay a heavy price. It is inhumane, undemocratic and racist.”
Mr. Ioannides, also stressed that “the Annan Plan undermines democratic values, the concept of family and human rights. “we live in America and we know what a federation is” he said” the Annan Plan violates the fundamental principles of a federation”
“There are some who fear there might be a euro-division if a solution is not found”, Ioannides said. He then explained that if the Annan Plan is implemented then the euro-partition will be legalized.
