WASHINGTON, D.C – The 1988 Democratic Nominee for President of the United States and former Governor of Massachusetts Michael Dukakis, U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes, and California State Treasurer Phil Angelides were among those Greek-Americans at a reception at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. This reception took place on July 26 at the home of Michael and Kitty Dukakis in the Boston suburbs and was organized by the leaders of the Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH), as they have organized such an event at every convention since 1984. CEH Chairman and SAE World President, Andrew A. Athens, and CEH President, Andrew Manatos, welcomed participants. The delicious Greek cuisine and drink was provided by and donated by Anita Baglaneas of Jules Catering. Treasurer Angelides was unable to attend the entire reception, as he was invited to deliver remarks to the convention that evening.
A number of Members of the U.S. Congress came to pay tribute to Greek-Americans at the convention, including: the Co-Chair of the Hellenic Caucus, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY); Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and his Greek-American wife and former Congressional staffer Katherine Wilkens; Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ); and Congressman Rush Holt (D-NJ).
Other Greek-American elected officials in attendance included: U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-NV) (whose mother is from the Jewish community of Thessaloniki, Greece); former U.S. Congressman John Brademas; Cook County Illinois Treasurer Maria Pappas; Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz; Connecticut State Representative and President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Union Demetrios Giannaros; New York State Assemblyman Michael Gianaris; South Carolina State Senator Phil Leventis; and former Rhode Island State Representative George Panichas. In addition, Jane Mitakides, who is running for the U.S. Congress in Ohio, also attended.
A number of the Kerry Campaign’s top contributors also attended this event, including: Kerry Campaign New York State Chair Dennis Mehiel; Sacramento, California businesswoman Eleni Tsakopoulos; and New Jersey State Finance Chair, Clay Constantinou. Journalist Arianna Huffington, as well as the Consul General of Greece in Boston, Konstantinos Bikas, were also in attendance.
On July 28, following Senator John Edwards’ acceptance speech and the roll call vote that elected John Kerry as the Democratic nominee for President, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios delivered the benediction. Those who had an opportunity to visit with His Eminence included: Senator John Edwards, his wife Elizabeth Edwards and their children; Convention Chairman and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson; Senator and Mrs. Sarbanes; Governor and Mrs. Dukakis; and Kerry Campaign Director of Ethnic Outreach, George Kivork. Archbishop Demetrios will be delivering a benediction at the Republican National Convention in New York on September 1.
