Nicosia.- (CNA) – President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has pledged on Wednesday to make the best possible effort to end the tragedy in Cyprus and reunite the country and the people.
Speaking during a visit at a National Guard post at Mammari village of Nicosia district, President Christofias said he did not want to reply to criticism, noting “as long as we are divided, there is no way we will be able to succeed in our fight”, adding “we need to united and to understand how difficult the times are and that our opponent is not joking and has all the means to misinform both his and the international public opinion”.
He called for unity to handle the Turkish beguiling propaganda.
The President said the aim is to reunify Cyprus and to achieve freedom of movement for the entire people. “I want to give the message that we must appreciate that Turkish Cypriots are children of the same country and they will take part in the governing of the state” and urged those who are not comfortable with the idea to live with it.
The President said Turkey had its chance to implement its expansionist plans in Cyprus, adding “I don’t believe that we shall give it the chance to solidify its expansionism, its division”.
Noting the aim is to avert the final division of the island, President Christofias said this will be hard and a persistent effort and sacrifice will be required. The bizonal, bicommunal federation brings with it sacrifices”, the President remarked.
“I want to promise that I will do the best that I can, I will not spare any effort, to end this tragedy, so that the people and country can be reunited. We should not give Turkey the chance to exploit foolish acts by anyone of us, and unfortunately this is being done repeatedly. I believe we are not masochists. I want to believe we are people who love our country and really want to be free of the evils of the invasion and occupation”, he concluded.
