CHICAGO.- IL. – Greek-American, Maria Pappas, Illinois Cook County Treasurer, is running for US Senate and the latest polls–including one by the Chicago Tribune and WGN-TV–have her leading the field for the Democratic party primary on March 16th.
Maria Pappas was born and raised in the close-knit Greek-American community of Wheeling, West Virginia. After college, she moved to Chicago to earn her Ph.D. in psychology, as well as a law degree. She then taught in eight foreign countries, including Greece, before settling in Chicago to pursue a successful careers as a psychologist, lawyer and later a social worker in some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods.
In 1990, Maria Pappas made her inaugural run for office and was elected a Cook County Commissioner in Chicago–a powerful legislative post whose holders govern the second largest municipal government in America. After eight years as a Commissioner–during which she established herself as a no-nonsense legislator with a knack for exposing corruption–Maria decided to take a step up and run for the position of Cook County Treasurer, a post considered to be one of the most powerful in the nation because of the budget the Treasurer controls–collecting and investing over $12 billion annually in property taxes, which is then distributed to school systems, hospitals, road repair agencies and other public services.
Maria Pappas was elected to her first term in 1998, and as a result of her extraordinary work in cleaning up the office and turning it into a model for other government agencies throughout the nation, she was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second term in 2002, with a majority of 960,000 votes–beating her opponent by over 30 percent. Clearly she had gained the respect–and trust–of the voters of Cook County.
But although she has won four elections in the County and has extremely high–and favorable– name recognition, Maria is practically unknown outside the Chicago area. Millions of dollars must be raised in order to buy airtime on statewide TV stations between now and the March 16th primary.
Maria Pappas is the only candidate with a strong legislative and administrative track record of success and the only candidate who will serve the needs and interests of the local, state, and national Greek-American community to her fullest capabilities.
She has already committed to establishing– when elected–a Greek American Leadership Political Action Committee under her aegis that will explore issues of concern to Greek Americans and help other Greek Americans seeking to enter the political arena.
Her Greek American friends call on the rest of the community to help Maria Pappas get elected to the US Senate and support financially her campaign. Every dollar raised is important and will help Maria Pappas to reach the voters of Illinois. The limit of contributions from a single individual for this election is $14,000.
“If 25,000 Greek Americans from throughout the nation contribute $40 each–that would be 1 million dollars that will help buy invaluable TV airtime leading up to election day. This is our goal: 25,000 Greek Americans donating at least $40 (or more)”, says a message from her campaign, send by e-mail.
