A 39-year-old Kuwaiti man was arrested Sunday after an EgyptAir flight was diverted to Athens over a bogus bomb scare, authorities said. EgyptAir flight 754, traveling from Madrid to Cairo, made an emergency stop in Athens Saturday after a handwritten note with the words “found the bomb” was found in the airplane’s bathroom.
Police at Athens International Airport found no bomb after searching the Airbus A320 for several hours. The suspect – whose name was not announced – was to be charged later Sunday with disturbing airport security. A second Kuwaiti man initially detained was released after questioning and was due to fly to Egypt.
The remaining 83 passengers and eight crew members flew to Egypt early Sunday. Egyptian security questioned the passengers at Cairo airport for 90 minutes before allowing them to enter the country.
