Staten Island, NY
Assemblywoman Nichole Malliotakis honored a Staten Island couple at St. Nicholas Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Staten Island yesterday in celebration of Greek Independence Day. John and Christine Charitis were recognized for their many years of volunteerism and service for the Boy and Girl Scouts, the Annual Greek Festival, and several local soup kitchens. The couple, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, also started a program at the Staten Island Zoo in memory of their two daughters Joanna, a special needs child, and Victoria, an animal lover. The program allows special needs children to interact with the zoo’s smaller animals in a safe and nurturing environment. In addition to her many charitable endeavors, Christine also authored the book ‘Staten Island’s Greek Community’ which was published in 2006. Also photographed is father Nicholas Petropoulakos, pastor of St. Nicholas Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
“John and Christine exemplify what it truly means to give back to others from their hearts. They managed to turn the devastating loss of their two daughters into an outlet to positively impact the lives of so many children who will now enjoy the experience and comfort of interaction with animals. The couple are not only proud Greek Americans, but also proud Staten Islanders whose work has tremendously benefitted countless children and individuals in need. We are very blessed to have them as members of our community,” said Assemblywoman Malliotakis.
