New York.- Children of the New York area parochial schools, boy scouts, hierarchs, clergy and laity warmly welcomed His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios as he entered the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Saturday, September 15, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the Episcopacy and 8th Anniversary as Archbishop of America.
The Archieratical Liturgy was celebrated by Archbishop Demetrios assisted by several hierarchs of the Eparchial Synod, clergy representing each Metropolis and the choir of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. Participating hierarchs were Metropolitan Maximos of Pittsburgh, Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta, Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey, Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos, Bishop Andonios of Phasiane and Bishop Savas of Troas, who offered the homily.
A pleasant surprise was the arrival of Bishop Mercurius of Zaraisk, administrator of the Moscow Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, who brought greetings from the chairman of the Moscow Patriarchateʼs Department for External Relations, Metropolitan Cyril of Smolensk and Kaliningrad. He was accompanied by two clergy and presented the Archbishop with flowers and a bas-relief of the Kremlin churches.
Following the Liturgy, His Eminence was surprised by the over 100 children who presented a special welcome including music and a poem written by a student especially for the occasion. His Eminence then proceeded to a reception in the Cathedral Center where he was enthusiastically greeted by members of the diplomatic corps, invited guest and clergy and laity from throughout the United States.
