New York.- Demetrius Kalamaras, President of the Federation of Hellenic Societies, stood in support of the Mayorʼs re-election bid. Mr. Kalamaras is a first generation Greek-American and a respected attorney. He has served on the board of the Incurable Illness Foundation and school board of the Demetrios and Georgia Kaloidis Parochial School. Composed of over 100 member organizations, The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York has served the Greek community of New York for over 70 years, offering a helping hand to tens of thousands of Greek-Americans who have called this country home since 1938. The Federation also hosts the annual Greek Independence Day parade on Fifth Avenue.
“Mayor Bloomberg has decisively lead our city over his last two terms with an innovative mindset and a strong desire to see the lives of all New Yorkers improve,” said Mr. Kalamaras. “The Mayor understands that our children need to have as many resources as possible available to them, and his turnaround of the school system has been nothing less than stellar. He also realizes how important it is to me and my fellow Greek-Americans that job-creation and the economy are constantly addressed. His leadership is critical to moving New York City in the right direction, and that is why I am supporting him fully for re-election.
“New York is fortunate to have one of the largest Greek-American communities in the nation,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Small businesses are the foundation of our cityʼs economy and an integral part of the Greek-American community. Serving over 12,000 businesses last year alone, our NYC Business Solutions Centers have, at no cost to businesses, given advice and the tools necessary to succeed. Our Administration is constantly finding innovative ways to tackle this tough economy – leaving no New Yorkers behind. I am thankful to have Demetriusʼ endorsement and the support of so many members of the Greek-American community.”
Mayor Bloombergʼs education policies have contributed to a 15.2% rise in four-year high school graduation rates and the creation of an additional 66,000 seats in City schools so that more New Yorkers have a chance to receive a proper education. Keeping our cityʼs children safe has been a top priority; crime in City school is also down 44%, leading to a safer and more productive environment for our children to learn.
In addition to his education reforms, Mikeʼs Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan will work to create and save approximately 400,000 jobs for New Yorkers in all five boroughs. Capital investment projects, currently totaling $10.4 billion, will lead to an additional 25,000 construction-related jobs. Mayor Bloomberg has already cut roughly $2 billion in wasteful spending in the Cityʼs budget, and saved close to $3.2 billion dollar in excess debt expenditures.
