Interim report encouraging, but tax evasion problems remain. Encouraging data on tourist arrivals.
Athens.- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) late Friday issues its interim report “Greece Stand-By Arrangement – Review under the Emergency Financing Mechanism”, in which it finds that the Greek stability program is broadly on track, with the Greek authorities having made considerable progress in putting the public finances on a sustainable path and have implemented major reforms ahead of schedule. For a good part of the last trading session, stocks stubbornly withstood Greek wisdom. You’ll recall that the Oracle of Chios, now headquartered on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, has been quite vocal regarding the likelihood of renewed economic downturn. Given that scenario, we have been warning regularly that stocks also seem prone to punishment. Through Thursday though, the Dow refused to let go. Read more

Rather, US shares are valued for reality, and a harsh reality is materializing. Thus, I view this latest upward activity as a bear market rally. Read more

The weekly barrage of economic data continued to pile on to the case for a double-dip recession last week. The harsh economic reality beat down hopeful strategists and forecasters with truth. It’s an ugly truth, unfortunately, but it’s what we must deal with. This latest week’s data dumping included more signs of slowing in manufacturing, housing, consumer sentiment and labor. Policy makers, corporate leaders and investment professionals are once again learning that you cannot fool the market with rhetoric for long. She is efficient at processing data, and eventually, each and every one of them must bow to the truth. Read more
