Two passengers died and five were seriously injured when a passenger train traveling on the Athens-Thessaloniki route derailed near the town of Adendro, 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Thessaloniki, on Saturday night.
The train’s engine was propelled into a nearby house. The cause of the accident was not yet known, fire brigade and police officials said.
Athens News Agency reported about 70-100 passengers were on board the train and some media said five carriages had derailed.
Twelve fire brigade trucks were deployed to the area, the fire brigade said and a rescue operation was under way.
