Greece: Corfu Conference Bring Back on the Table NATO and Russia

The Greek island hosted an informal summit of the foreign ministers of the 56 member countries of the OSCE, presided by Greece
Corfu.- NATO and Russia on Saturday resumed formal cooperation on broad security threats but failed to bridge major differences over Georgia in their first high-level talks since the war in the Caucasus region. NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the alliance and Russia have agreed to resume military ties after a 10-month hiatus caused by the war between Russia and Georgia.

Alexandros (Aleco) Haralambides, who succeeded Eugene Rossides, Founder and President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), as President of the AHI in February, 2009, spoke with the GreekNews on the evening before his departure for Cyprus and Greece with the AHI last week. He expressed optimism that the AHI will make progress in conveying its message on several Hellenic issues in Washington, DC, and also shared his views on Greek American involvement in Hellenic issues and the perpetuation of Greek heritage in America. A 3rd generation Greek American born to a Greek American father and Cuban mother, Mr. Haralambides speaks Greek and Spanish fluently and identifies equally with American and Greek culture.

Nicosia.- (CNA) - The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias, and T/c leader Mehmet Ali Talat, have reached an agreement for the opening of Limnitis crossing point and the access to and from Kokkina.

Community: Vassilis Kaskarelis the New Ambassador of Greece to the U.S.

Washington, D.C.- Mr. Vassilis Kaskarelis has been appointed as the new Ambassador of Greece to the United States.
Ambassador Kaskarelis was born in Athens. He graduated from the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens where he studied Economics, Politics and Law.
He has a long and wide-ranging diplomatic career.

Συνάντηση του Προεδρείου της Μόνιμης Επιτροπής Ελληνισμού της Διασποράς της Βουλής των Ελλήνων με το Προεδρείο του ΣΑΕ
Θεσσαλονίκη.- Την ετήσια έκθεση του Συμβουλίου Απόδημου Ελληνισμού (ΣΑΕ) για το έτος 2008 παρέδωσε ο Πρόεδρος της οργάνωσης Στέφανος Ταμβάκης στα Μέλη του Προεδρείου της Μόνιμης Επιτροπής Ελληνισμού της Διασποράς της Βουλής των Ελλήνων, στο πλαίσιο κοινής συνεδρίασης με το Προεδρείο του ΣΑΕ. Στη συνάντηση έγινε συζήτηση πάνω στα θέματα που περιλαμβάνει η Έκθεση, αλλά και το θέμα της ψήφου των αποδήμων, που όπως αναφέρθηκε μπορεί να έρθει ξανά στο προσκήνιο.

Ικανοποίηση εκφράζουν οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής Πύργου από την διάνοιξη του οδοφράγματος του Λιμνίτη. Ο κοινοτάρχης Κάτω Πύργου σε δηλώσεις στο ραδιόφωνο του ΡΙΚ εξέφρασε την ελπίδα και την αισιοδοξία ότι δεν θα υπάρξουν άλλα προσκόμματα από τουρκικής πλευράς και ότι το οδόφραγμα θα ανοίξει σύντομα.
